Spiral: From The Book Of Saw-What We Know So Far

It’s been a minute since we saw the last of the Saw franchise in theaters. Really it’s been a minute since we saw anything in theaters, but we haven’t revisited that twisted sadist with a rigid moral code in nearly four years. The last film, titled Jigsaw, came out in October 2017 and was a box office smash even if the critic weren’t as enthusiastic. Honestly, as far as any of the Saw movies go, they aren’t designed for critics. They are intended for mass entertainment. Gruesome and gory traps coupled with a byzantine series of plot twists are the calling cards. The newest addition, Spiral, looks to keep all of the viewer appeal of the bloody franchise and interject some new blood(pun intended). Here is everything you need to know about Spiral: From The Book Of Saw, releasing May 14th, 2021.

Spiral is the ninth film in the Book of Saw. It stars Chris Rock as detective Zeke Banks. Zeke and his rookie partner, played by Max Minghella(The Handmaid’s Tale), begin investigating a grisly set of murders eerily reminiscent of the terrible crimes in the cities infamous past. Along with grizzled veteran cop Samuel L. Jackson. The trailer certainly seems to indicate that while all the original franchise’s visceral magic is there, this is a fresh start for the now nine movie story.

The film is directed by Darren Lynn Bousman, who led the second, third, and fourth Saw films in the franchise. Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger wrote the script based on Chris Rock’s story about a cocky detective who gets sucked into a cat and mouse game with a smart serial killer. Bousman and Lionsgate have managed to keep the lid on most details, which is remarkable considering it has been held for months now. The film could have been dumped on the VOD market, but they elected to hold it until it was safer for theaters to accept moviegoers again. That executives are this confident in the film means big things for lovers of the Saw franchise and horror movies in general.
