Netflix’s reboot of the beloved early oughts animated series about fairies, specialists who fight for them, and witches is back with an expanded season 2. Fate: The Winx Saga was a surprise hit last year with a tiny six-episode run. Although Netflix wasn’t ready to fully commit to a ten-episode season, it did give us an extra two episodes to immerse ourselves in the weird and wacky world of gossamer light-up wings, on-the-nose character names, and duplicitous adults. Our favorite magic entities are back with more fantastical shenanigans and hard bodies. The show based on a young adult cartoon is surprisingly adult, especially in its female gaze. Seriously they find every opportunity for Sky(Danny Griffin) to bare his chiseled chest. A lot happened between all the sex, magical stalls, and lying. The more we learn about Bloom and the Dragon Flame, the less we actually know. By the end of Fate: The Winx Saga Season 2, we learn Bloom isn’t just a changeling. She is fairy royalty and over a thousand years old. Bloom’s mother was a war hero and had the Dragon Flame originally. Bloom was placed in stasis for a thousand years and was only released seventeen years ago. Her mother couldn’t control her power and went to the Realm of Darkness, where she still might be.

The ending of Fate: The Winx Saga Season 2

At the end of Fate: The Winx Saga season 2, Bloom is released from stasis, and Terra, Bloom, Stella, and Aisha combine their powers and defeat Sebastian after transforming. It isn’t just Bloom who can grow wings now. The ladies are more potent together and use that increased force to lay waste to the witchy waste, as it were. Musa, who was magically sidelined but found a way to fight alongside the specialists, got her groove back, and poor Flora has a nasty bite to deal with. Flora, who became a valuable member of the club, will undoubtedly have lasting consequences from the attack.

Rosalind’s storyline is over. Bloom killed her when she finally realized how much she had manipulated her. Unfortunately, Beatrix is also dead. Sebastian exploded after the girls unleashed their full combined power on him, and Farah Dowling is gone for good now. Sky almost dies, but luckily, Bloom is able to save him, so the handsome warrior lives to fight another day. In the closing moments, Bloom left letters for all her loved ones and went through the portal to close it for good. As she entered the Realm of Darkness, she saw a woman from behind and called out for her mother. Is Bloom in for a rude awakening in Fate: The Winx Saga Season 3?

Theories on the Bloom’s Mom

Having gone through the portal to the Realm of Darkness so she can close it once and for all, Bloom finds a home with a woman we only see from behind. Who is this mysterious woman? Is she one of the Blood Witches who took baby Bloom or someone even more critical? In the original series, Bloom’s parents were the King and Queen of Domino. It appears the live-action version may be following a similar suit. Bloom’s mother is special and had the Dragon Flame before her. We know she is a hero who used her power to win the war, but we don’t know if she is still alive in the Realm of Darkness and what condition she might be in if she is still alive. We know some things live there, like the Shadow that Sebastian wanted to control.

The powerful being would allow Sebastian to resurrect his people, who all died in Aster Dell. This is why he had been kidnapping and siphoning off fairy magic. He needed all the magic he could get to open the portal. The Shadow may have been able to give him his people back, but it also would destroy the world they live in. Bloom goes there to close the portal but also to get answers. Sebastian told her her mother was stuck there, having lost control of the Dragon Flame. Considering how many lies Bloom has been told about her parents, however, it is hard to say if that is true.

As the final episode closes, Bloom enters a hut and sees an older woman from behind. Is this Bloom’s dangerous mother or someone else equally bad? She has a vision of Shadow and the Realm of Darkness shortly before Sebastian dies. Is it possible Shadow and her mother are the same people? It would explain her wild powers and her connection to Shadow.

The Realm of Darkness was supposed to be a terrible place full of monsters and shadows. It should have been a hellscape of nightmares, but instead, it looks just like Otherworld. Have the stories of this place been exaggerated? Why would anyone lie about what was there? Unfortunately, we will have to wait until Fate: The Winx Saga Season 3 to find out.

Theories about Shadow

While Stella is mourning Beatrix at her grave, a shadow appears. When Sebastian opened the portal, it seemed he had released Shadow. Now that it has been released, that will add a new wrinkle to an already messy school year. It almost appears Shadow is mourning Beatrix. Could this prove that Bloom and Beatrix were sisters and their mother is Shadow? If that’s the case, who is the old woman Bloom calls Mom at the end of Fate: The Winx Saga Season 2?

The most exciting possibility surrounding Shadow is why it is at Beatrix’s grave. Shadow can alter life and death. This is why Sebastian wanted to control it. What if now that the Shadow is out of the Realm of Darkness, it is setting its own agenda? Fans of Sadie Soverall’s character arch as Beatrix in Fate: The Winx Saga Season 2 might see her again in Season 3. Dead doesn’t always mean gone in Netflix’s series. This might be a way for Beatrix to continue to grow as a magical being and even become a friend to our group of fairies. The air fairy was a good foil for Bloom and had plenty of magic to spare.

The second theory about Shadow could point toward Bloom’s mother. Sebastian didn’t need the Dragon Flame to open the portal. He did that sometime before his death. Shadow has had plenty of time to enter Otherworld. Sebastian wanted the Dragon Flame because the Shadow wanted it. The Dragon Flame is supremely powerful magic, so it is understandable that everyone wants it but what if the Shadow wants it to return to its original form? We know Bloom’s mother had the Dragon Flame before her and lost control of it.

As a result, she went to the Realm of Darkness for everyone’s safety. What if the Dragon Flame burns so brightly that it burns out when it consumes a person? Like a dying star creates a black hole, the absence of the Dragon Flame might turn into the literal lack of light, shadow. If this is true, Bloom’s mother could be the Shadow. If that’s the case, we don’t know how much of her human conscience she retains.

Does the Shadow have the ability to make the Realm of Darkness look more habitable? Bloom thinks she has a vision of her future. She felt her vision was of her meeting Shadow but what if her vision was of the past? What if she was seeing her mother? It wouldn’t be the first time a young adult series pitted bad parents against their offspring to drive the drama. Whether Bloom’s mom is the potentially evil Shadow, dead, or void of humanity, it will be fun to watch. Fans have speculated since the first season that Bloom and Beatrix could be related. It would be a departure from canon, but watching these two navigate some tricky waters might be fun. Until Season 3, we will have to speculate who the old woman is, what the Shadow wants, and who Beatrix’s two sisters are.
