All The Best Horror Movies On Hulu Right Now

Hulu gets a bad rap sometimes.  People think of it more as that place to go to cut the cable cord, or if you forgot to DVR something.  Little by little they have been carving out a niche with some excellent original programming.  Some is better than others but a few really made waves.  The Handmaid’s Tale and Castle Rock put Hulu directly in the cross-hairs of juggernaut Netflix. For all of that, it is often the last place people look for horror.  Surprisingly there are quite a few really good movies.  Everything from classics to slashers and psychological thrillers can be found.  With Hulu cutting its monthly fee to $5.99 there is no better time to check out all they have to offer.  I’ll break down all the best horror on Hulu now into categories so you can pick just the right sub-genre for your mood.

Classics:

All those old school horrors from the seventies and eighties that still provide plenty of chills and thrills despite their age.

A Quiet Place
This is a masterpiece of sensory deprivation. The acting is fantastic, the camera work creative and impactful, and monsters super cool. With the news of a second Quiet Place on the horizon, there is no better time to remind yourself how good this original was. Bonus: Jim from the office is adorable!

Annihilation
Alex Garland’s adaptation of Jeff Vandermeer’s Southern Reach Trilogy is gorgeous and trippy and very, very unique.

 Rosemary’s Baby
Perhaps the greatest film showcasing male dominance and oppression.  Sure the plot is developed around a possible devil baby, but it is also a brilliant indictment on fragility, isolation, paranoia, and male toxicity before that was even a thing.

Monsters and Aliens

Everything that goes bump in the night can be found in this category.

 Let the Right One In(2008)
A young boy gets bullied relentlessly until he befriends someone who can help in super deadly ways.  The American remake of this Swedish vampire movie was not nearly as weighty as the original.  The novel by John Lindqvist is fantastic, but this is the rare movie that is just as good.  It is atmospheric and emotional along with deeply scary.  As tragic as it is horrific Let The Right One In is great from beginning to end.

 An American Werewolf In London
This movie absolutely does not get the respect it deserves.  The special effects work is amazing especially when given how old this film is.  This is the single best depiction of werewolf transformation and the ensuing chaos of all time.  This is the quintessential lycanthrope movie, and the on by which all others are judged.  It skirts the line between self aware intelligence and winking parody expertly.

 The Quiet Place
On everyone’s best of 2018 lists this movie packs a powerful silent punch.  The creatures are truly terrifying and Emily Blunt’s birth scene is straight nightmare fuel.  I can’t even imagine having to squeeze a baby out in circumstances like that.  I had my babies in a hospital with all the yelling, cursing, and drugs they would allow thank you very much.
GhostsThe paranormal take center stage in the best horror on Hulu with a decidedly haunting bent.

 Catacombs
A young woman in Paris goes to a party in the enormous labyrinth of limestone tunnels beneath Paris. When she becomes separated from her friends, she is convinced something is chasing her through the dark tunnels.

 Stir of Echoes
In this Kevin Bacon led thriller a man is reluctantly hypnotized by his sister-in-law and then begins seeing visions of a ghost.  It sounds kind of silly, but it is actually a cool mystery with great psychological scares.  It is also a compelling character study with Bacon doing most of the heavy lifting.  You will want to grip your hands tight and maybe even close your eyes in one nail-biting scene(sorry, not sorry I couldn’t resist).
Viruses and Body HorrorThe Outbreak is here and everything is changing and mutating in grotesque ways in these films about disease and corruption.

Mom and Dad
These good parents gone not just bad but downright homicidal is a lot of fun.  It raiser real questions about parental anxiety, justified child angst, and of course how awesome is Nic Cage?  It’s kind of like that South Park episode when watching Informative Murder Porn causes some of the parents to kill each other only not funny and it’s a weird static that flips the switch.

 Honeymoon
Any chance to see GOT’s Ygritte(Rose Leslie) is worth it.  Combine that with Harry Treadway who portrays your Everyman who is equal parts cute and sweet, and terrified of his wife changing after marriage(sigh) and you have a quality movie with plenty of body horror elements and sci-fi goodness to appeal to a diverse crowd.  This film is well acted, well shot, and has a nifty little story.
Comedic HorrorHow about a side of laughs with your gore.  They can’t all be serious, right?

 Tucker and Dale vs Evil
Two backwoods bros on vacation at an isolated cabin are mistaken for murderous killers.  What could go wrong, right?  Absolutely nothing goes wrong in this near perfect horror/comedy starring Alan Tudyk of every good sci-fi show ever and Tyler Labine.  It is fall down funny and gory.  This is exactly what funny slashers should be.

 Zombieland
A shy student trying to reach his family in Ohio, a gun-toting tough guy trying to find the last Twinkie, and a pair of sisters trying to get to an amusement park join forces to travel across a zombie-filled America.

 John Dies at the End
Two college drop outs discover a street drug that transports users across place and time.  The only problem being they don’t always return human.  The entire movie is told from our two stoners perspective as they try to save the day and that myopic presentation provides for some of the best twists.  The cast is amazing(John Giamatti much), the story is brilliant, and the shocks keep coming.

 Tragedy Girls
Two teen aged girls with a You Tube channel to investigate real life murders find themselves and subsequently their town embroiled in a frenzied mystery.  This film is very sly in its subversion.  What appears at first blush to be just another female empowerment revenge thriller is actually a smart commentary on social media, gender rolls, and the cult of youth.  The humor is black as night and sharp as a knife.  This is the Heathers of this generation.

WeirdnessAll those things that don’t really fit anywhere else but deserve to be seen.

 Annihilation
A gorgeous adaptation of Jeff Vandermeer’s Southern Reach Trilogy from Alex Garland is everything fans of the novel wanted.  Something has invaded our world and after many failed attempts an all female team of scientists must explore the unknown.  Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tessa Thompson, and Gina Rodriguez headline an unbelievable cast.  The cinematography alone is reason enough to see this movie.  The bear scene is one of the single creepiest moments in history.

A young girl married to an older guy renovates a house while all kinds of bizarre house guests invade.  It’s almost impossible to describe this movie any further.  Woah, but this is the mother lode of layered allegory.  Layer upon layer of symbolism elevate this obvious lovestory to himself from Darren Aronofsky.  It’s pretentious, artsy, disgusting, and really good.  It’s an odd mix of great and irritating but in the sweet spot between the two is something well worth your time.  If you are a fan of Reddit research it is a must watch.

 Paranormal Activity
One of the greatest found footage films of all time, Oren Peli’s masterpiece on a budget is flat out terrifying.  A young couple gets abused by the mother of all entities over the series of several weeks and it is all caught on camera.  When Micah begins to suspect his suburban house is haunted he naturally hooks up his video camera and places it on a tripod facing his bed.  I guess if he doesn’t catch any ghosts he can always use it for a sex tape.  The genius of this movie is the completely normal people and setting mixed with everyone’s fear of being vulnerable while you sleep.  This movie is more than a little unsettling.

 Final Destination
The first of what would become the go to franchise for up close, creative kills.  The first is by far the best, but Hulu has 1,2, and 3, so you could make a whole night of it if you chose.  It’s probably not a great idea to watch this movie before a airplane trip and you will look at all kinds of things in your daily life with an increased sense of dread, but damn is this movie a eyefull of fun.

 Case 39
If the cast of Jodelle Ferland, Bradley Cooper, and Renee Zellweger doesn’t pique your interest the serious creep factor this movie has should.  Ferland plays a little girl who’s parents tried to kill her and now she finds herself in the care of the state.  Zellweger plays her social worker who begins slowly but surely to question whether or not the homicidal parents had it right all along.  This movie is genuinely scary.

The Devils Doorway
Two priests are sent to investigate a possible case of possession in a Magdalene Laundry.  They find more than they expect to.This is an unexpectedly good found footage film that pulls from many different sub-genres to make a genuinely scary film.  Director Aislinn Clarke does a phenomenal job bringing a fresh angle to this overdone trope.  The horror stems from both the terrible history of these institutions and a terrifying final act that delivers all the fears.

Horrific HumansThere is nothing scarier than a regular old person.  These people are monsters all by themselves.

 Shutter Island
To say anything other than two detectives try to solve a mysterious murder within an isolated mental institution would be giving to much away.  From top to bottom this film is genius.  It is scary, eerie, heartbreaking and horrifying.  It is the kind of movie you can see over and over again and never get bored.  Leonardo DiCaprio, Michelle Williams, and Mark Ruffalo give performances that will haunt you.  If you have never seen it make this our top priority.  If you have seen it before rediscover all that the island has to show you.

 Seven
A more tightly constructed murder mystery horror film can not be found.  Everything from the plot to the surprise ending and the incredible performances by Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, and Kevin Spacey are top notch.  Even f you have seen this movie many times it is still captivating.  It is a more thoughtful Saw.

 My Bloody Valentine(1981)
The ’80s original is far superior to the Jensen Ackles led mess.  The premise is simple and the story is tightly woven to keep the focus where it belongs the practical effects and the jump scares.  It’s ridiculous, but an entertaining bit of fluff that is a classic old school slasher.
