La Brea Season 2 Episode 13 And 14 The Journey Part 1 And 2 Ending Explained- Who Lives And Dies And What It Means For Season 3
La Brea is nothing if it isn’t predictable. That’s part of the charm of this goofy little network series that shouldn’t work and yet somehow does. With a Season 2 finale ending that leaned hard into its delightfully self-aware roots, we got none of the closure we wanted but all the questions we needed.
Forget everything we have been told about time travel from Dr. Who. Bootstraps be damned; we are going back in time to give a warning before being sucked into a warp to who knows where. Before that happens, though, some significant character developments occur. Here’s everything you need to know about La Brea Season 2 Episode 13 and 14.
Veronica and Lucas
My favorite oddball couple has some serious talking to do. Veronica is pregnant and giving birth, and raising a baby in 10,000 BCE is not on her bucket list. On the other hand, Lucas wants to stay in the time and place that has allowed him to grow as a person. He isn’t the same drug-dealing criminal he was when he fell through the sinkhole. The biggest proof is that after learning about the baby, he is willing to risk everything to return home and face the consequences of his past life. He saves the day by fixing the water diversion with his new pet horse.
Veronica has changed too, and things won’t be easy for her when they return. She is a victim of abduction and child abuse. Nothing will be easy for these two. The only certainty is that the duo of Lily Santiago(Veronica) and Josh McKenzie(Lucas) has grown on me. In Season 3, I want to see them stay in another time where their past traumas and mistakes can’t hurt them. Maybe they can go through the portal just for the birth and then zip back to 10,000 BCE?
Sam and Riley
Riley finds out her dad has been keeping a huge secret. Sam and his wife are getting a divorce. As much as he wants to get home to see his son, his marriage hasn’t been a priority. She is shocked by this but uses it to mend the rift between her and Josh. We need both of their medical expertise so nothing bad will happen to them in Season 3, but I predict that the new woman Catharine will become very important. There’s nothing like a good love interest to spice things up, and Sam has been neglected for too long.
Ty and Paara
Ty almost lost his chance at life again when Levi blew up the tower. However, a few of his cancer-curing pills were saved thanks to Kira’s resourcefulness, and he has hope again. Paara is so grateful for Silas’ help getting him those drugs she even figures him. This is good news for the whole group as Silas is one of the few people alive by the end of La Brea Season 2 Episode 13 and 14, that understands the science behind the portals. That is increasingly important as the finale ends.
Scott, Petra, and Levi
New addition Petra is a little girl the group finds on their way to Dr. Moore’s hidden portal. At first, she is terrified and refuses to speak and later only speaks German to Scott, who conveniently took a couple of years in college. Scott really is the Inspector Gadget of La Brea. Later Petra admits she speaks English and tells Scott if he helps her find her mom, she will tell him everything he wants to know. How much she actually knows remains to be seen, but the fact she was found with several mutilated bodies is intriguing.
The other important takeaway from their interactions is that the person Scott was scheduled to interview with is Petra’s mother. Additionally, the engraving on Petra’s locket and the tattoo on Levi’s arm is the company’s logo. Who they are and what they have to do with the portals, we will find out in Season 3. Were they chosen to be transported to the past? Almost certainly, these are the dangerous people Levi said he got sideways with in 2022, though.
James, Kira, and Gavin’s sister
Both are terrible human beings. Kira didn’t kill Caroline, but she is still obsessed with her science. They manage to get Ty’s pills from her, but I doubt she ever changes. She is still the same singleminded person as before, and La Brea loves to make these villains sympathetic, if only for a second before they reveal their true nature and betray everyone again. James’ bombshell of Gavin’s sister at the end could mean she will have a bigger role to play in Season 3. But, of course, she might also still be Izzy from another timeline.
James is a snake. He is such a maniacal menace he still can’t see Gavin as anything but an obstacle to Isaiah, even though they are the same person. He didn’t care if Gavin lived or died. At the end of the La Brea Season 2 finale, Gavin finally gave him what was coming to him. He shot and killed him, but it came with a considerable consequence. The portal was damaged by several of the wild shots, and they may have lost their opportunity to go home.
The biggest questions are: Who is Gavin’s sister, and why has no one else mentioned her? Is she a half-sister, and Caroline and Silas aren’t aware of her? If so, who is her mother? Are they related to Petra’s mother?
Gavin, Eve, Izzy, and Josh
Izzy and Josh spend most of the finale going what they do best, nag and worry. Josh and Riley are back together, and Izzy has changed her mind so many times about Levi I have whiplash. These two need something else to do besides worry about their parents. Hopefully, La Brea Season 3 will give Izzy some depth.
Neither Gavin nor Eve died. Gavin’s vision did not come true, and Eve didn’t die with a cut on her hand underneath the red flowering tree. It didn’t look good for Gavin before Eve and Izzy used the portal to travel four hours before they entered the orchard of red trees and left him a message. Because of the warning, he could avoid being impaled and dying. Unfortunately, whoever tied up James did not do a great job, and he got loose, resulting in his death and Eve’s new location.
When the portal malfunctioned due to the gunshots, she was locked in the portal room by herself and sucked into one of many possible timelines. The good news is they have Dr. Moore’s journal, but they have other pressing problems to address. The sinkhole that opened all over the sky were from all different times. There could be anything now across a vast span of time. Gavin, Izzy, and Josh came across a T Rex as they ran away, but that could be the least of their concerns.
NBC has greenlit a shortened La Brea Season 3. So hopefully, all our questions will be answered when it returns next fall. Find all our La Brea coverage here.
