La Brea Season 2 Episode 3 The Great Escape Recap And Review- Theories On The Black Rock, The Tower, And The Exiled

If there is anything La Brea loves to do, it is to stir up trouble and balance it with sentimental drama. La Brea Season 2 Episode 3 showed us how people are the same regardless of the timeline, group, or life experience. Lying, scheming, taking advantage, and fighting are just part of the gig whether you are in the Ice Age or 2022.

Things are about to get very messy. La Brea Season 2’s love triangle is going to be a problem moving forward. Eve and Levi begin La Brea Episode 3, thinking they are rekindling their love affair. This time free of the guilt and responsibility that plagued their last attempt. Their bliss is short-lived; however, when Gavin appears with a renewed devotion to Eve and a map, no one really trusts. They collectively decide to go with the original plan, however. With Virgil’s help, they think they have the numbers to overpower the guards and escape.

It seems like their plan will work for a short period. Everyone makes it out alive but is quickly greeted by a large group of the Exiled. Gavin sacrifices himself and tells them this was all his idea. For the second week in a row, a member of our group is taken to be tortured by the Exiled and comes back with barely a scratch. Either these are the worst violent faction ever, or they aren’t as concerned with fighting as they first seem. It could go either way, as La Brea sometimes plays fast and loose with reasonability.

We got valuable insight into the interconnectivity of the groups and the Tower in La Brea Season 2 Episode 3. The Exiled are mining the black rock and delivering it to the people in the Tower. It is thought to be fuel, but for what and why they agree to work with the more modern group, we don’t know yet.

Curiously both groups are divided into two camps. The peacekeeping group wants to preserve relations, and the warring side thinks you have to fight for what you need. Gavin wants to run, while Levi wants to fight their way out. In the clearing, Lucas wants to steal food back from the villagers, while Ty worries about the repercussions. Finally, after a vote goes against Lucas, Veronica and Scott agree to team up for the food heist.

Lucas continues to be predictable but finds small moments of character growth. He is a fighter. It is who he is, and when he sees the man who killed his mother, he wants to attack. When he sees the man with his son, though, he has a change of heart. The impulsive hero in the making is changing. He chooses to ignore his normal emotional behavior and think about the ramifications. He still stole the food, which will undoubtedly cause problems, but he spared the man because he couldn’t let another son grow up without a father.

Lily Santiago(Veronica) and Josh McKenzie(Lucas) remain the most dynamic and believable pair. They are the most flawed duo with the most potential for redemption. They also read the truest, which allows Santiago and McKenzie the space to explore the dynamics of their pain and relationship.

This is utterly contrary to his typical behavior, though. Veronica and Lucas see that he is acting weird but are more preoccupied with feeding everyone than what he is hiding. For reasons we don’t learn until later, he is lying to everyone about the Tower and Rebecca. After faking an injury, Scott separates from the trio and steals a metal key card from Silas’ quarters. Rebecca asked him to get the card and lie to the group because she isn’t ready to divulge her secrets yet. The maddeningly evasive woman loves to talk in riddles and half-truths.

She tells Scott she needs the key card to get into The Tower. She further reveals she knows how to get Josh and Riley back but didn’t need to tell Scott that information before. Knowing how everyone is interconnected, I wouldn’t be surprised to find out the professor in 1988 is now in the Tower and was once colleagues with Rebecca. However, we still don’t know if she is a friend or foe. She claims to be helping Scott, but she has proven to be deceptive and self-serving in the past. Scott would be wise to tell at least a few of the others what is happening.

Rebecca also seems to know where Gavin is and that he has escaped from the Exiled. Is this because it has happened before, or does she have spies in other groups feeding her information? Gavin and Eve felt like they knew each other forever when they first met because, in a way, they had. How long has Rebecca known them, and how will that factor into the coming conflict between the Exiled, the villagers, and our clearing group?

What is the black rock, The Tower, and how are the groups aligned in La Brea Season 2 Episode 3?

Levi assumes the black rock is a fuel used in the Tower for some purpose. Considering he doesn’t yet know what the Tower is, his guess is pretty miraculous. Likely he thinks the rock burns similar to coal and is used to heat spaces and forge materials. He has no idea that a modern building exists. Nor does he know that structure likely has advanced equipment that requires a power source. Could this rock create the sinkholes? David Applebaum, the showrunner for La Brea, has said that the rock has ties to the greater mythology of the show. Something as simple as a precursor to our coal today would not be nearly as exciting as having the rock filled with time or dimension-altering qualities. Think of the black rock more like Star Trek’s dilithium crystals, only with time-traveling capabilities.

As for why the Exiled and the Tower are working together, it should be considered that the Exiled, for all their bluster, are not advanced. They have steel and wheels but nothing more modern than that. What if this group also wanted to get home and were promised a way home by those in the Tower? It would ensure that they remain compliant and motivated indefinitely. They wouldn’t be educated enough to know they are being exploited. They also are desperate enough to make a deal with the Devil.

Regardless of who the Exiled are and what they know, a reckoning is coming. Scott will have to admit what he has been doing with Rebecca, the Exiled will want their prisoners back, and the villagers will notice their missing food. Additionally, Eve is going to have to decide between Levi and Gavin. It isn’t fair to either man. Next week we should see what Josh and Riley have been up to in 1988. The mythology is being fleshed out, and it’s beginning to get exciting. Find all our La Brea coverage here.
