A wise person once told me, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. La Brea Season 3 Episode 4 doubles down on the formula that allowed them three seasons worth of unlikely episodes. There is a storm brewing, though; friends and foes have more in common than anyone knows. There is a sense of urgency as we race toward the end of the series. In another episode full of revelations, the pieces begin to come together.

In 2021, Gavin, Ty, and Sam met a temporary roadblock when Gavin is kidnapped by the blond stalker from the last episode, and Ty is nearly run down. At the same time, our 10,000 BC crew decided to use tar pit tree mail one more time to get a message to Scott in 2021. Gavin, in 10,000, was contacted by whoever was on the other end of the server, who told him he needed to bring them the chip in exchange for Eve. The problem is 10,000 BC Gavin has no idea where it is.

The plan is to get Scott the message and have him contact Gavin in 2021, who might know. As usual, there are a lot of ifs and conditions that have to be met for everything to work out. That’s part of the goofy charm of La Brea, though. It doesn’t require you to do mental gymnastics. Go along for the ride, and don’t ask too many questions.

We learned more about this mysterious microchip in La Brea Season 3 Episode 4. It is the prototype for the weaponization of time travel. It allows for a web of portals to be interconnected so multiple people can travel across timelines and places. As with most futuristic technology, especially time travel, the ramifications are catastrophic. The biggest revelation, however, is that Gavin has a half-sister, and his father invented time travel. I half expected to have Sam from Quantum Leap show up.

The plan to get the microchip leans heavily on Scott in 2021, who wasn’t exactly reliable, and his future self worries he isn’t up to the task. Luckily, Ty is kind and has the memory of an elephant. Sam and Ty track him down and convince him they can be trusted by detailing everything Ty knows about him. Ty, in any timeframe, is a welcome addition. His calm demeanor and trustworthy spirit come through. He is always an asset. Luckily, the man who found himself and his love in 10,000 BC makes it back to his home and his partner by the end of La Brea Season 3 Episode 4.

Before that, though, Gavin learns he and his half-sister had been working together to take down the time travel program. Helena leads him to a security box that requires both to open. That is where Gavin hides the chip. Armed with the chip and the knowledge, she leads him to one last surprise. There are more dual auroras; as surmised, they go to two different places.

One goes to 2021 or 10,000 BC, depending on the side you are on, and the other goes to 1965. That is the beginning of everything. It is the SKYNET of time travel in La Brea. Helena wants to get the chip to 1965 to prevent everything from happening, but Ty and Sam get to the aurora just in time, and the group argues. When she pulls a gun on them to force Gavin into the 1965 side, Sam wrestles the gun away, and Gavin chooses to give it to Ty.

Helena is convinced they made the wrong decision, and it certainly looks bleak with Maya acting as a double agent. This group is resourceful and endlessly resilient, however. They all are better versions of themselves. It allows Veronica to devise a plan to bust the dam and put out the fire threatening everyone and, what will enable them to save their friends and get everyone back to where they belong, even if that isn’t necessarily 2021.

All of the people(except Judah, maybe) are better for their time in 10,000 BC. Ty was cured, found his love, and learned to accept as much help as he gave. Sam is learning to connect with his daughter and forgive himself for being unable to always be a hero. Scott found his purpose and worked through his grief. Izzy is slightly less annoying and selfish. Poor Scott can’t catch a break, however. He wants to trust Maya because he admires her and feels responsible for losing Petra. By the end of the episode, we know she can’t be trusted. She has been working against the group the entire time. She has been working with the base to get back the microchip Gavin stole. Now that Ty is back with the microchip, she can put her plan into motion.

Theories on Scott’s paper Universal Flora in La Brea Season 3 Episode 4

What happened to Scott? We don’t know yet, but people are stacking up at the base. They have Levi and now Scott. Presumably, they also have Eve, although she just as easily could be in 1965 with Gavin’s father. Scott’s paper Universal Flora put him on Maya’s radar. Something about plant material that can regenerate ties into time travel. Maybe time travel damages cellular tissue, and they need the plants to counteract that. Perhaps the plant material acts as fuel when combined with the stones they mine for? We don’t know yet, but if the base wanted Scott, there was a reason. Here’s hoping the nervous anthropologist can figure out what they want before it is too late. It might be time for him to step up and save himself.

Veronica and Lucas continue to step up. Whether it be to save the village or Sam and a dog, they are the people they were always meant to be. Veronica is a victim of abduction who finally has some autonomy, and Lucas sheds his selfish, criminal ways and becomes one of the most influential people in the village. He developed into a true leader. A real leader understands when to lead and when to support. It was hard for him, but he set aside his ego to show his support for Veronica. That support was tested when a massive fire swept across the countryside. Veronica was quick with a plan that put out the fire before any real damage was done. The group also added another member in La Brea Season 3 Episode 4. First, Lucas rescued an adorable wolf puppy and, later, Sam.

The end is coming, and everyone must make some hard decisions. Some will have to choose to stay behind in 10,000 BC, leaving their friends and family in the future. Others will have to return to 2021, where they belong, but leave their new families behind. Gavin may have to choose to sacrifice someone he loves to save the world.
