La Brea Season 3 Episode 5 The Road Home Part 1 Review And Recap- The Beginning Of The End Starts Now
Across three seasons, I have watched and written about La Brea. The show has felt like a rehash of Terra Nova. More recently, it has reminded me of another NBC science fiction show with a cult following, Timeless. That’s a great thing as we head into the season finale. La Brea Season 3 Episode 5 has hit its stride, and all of the pieces are finally coming together. All of the goofy effects, formulaic episodes, and occasionally pointless characters have led us here. The penultimate episode of La Brea started us down the road home. One hero lost his life, and others are finding their footing. As we close in on the end of the series, I wonder where everyone will be when it ends.
There’s a traitor in the village. We know that Maya took Scott and the others and has been working against Gavin and company, but no one else does, or so we thought. After another message requests the chip in exchange for Eve, the group makes plans. They know they are probably walking into a trap, but they don’t have a lot of choices. Luckily, several of the main group suspect Maya. Gavin has questioned her for some time, and Lucas and Sam doubt her but don’t have any evidence. When Veronica finds a radio in the council’s tent, she knows someone in leadership is working against them. They don’t suspect Ruth, though. When Veronica tells everyone about the radio and Ruth promptly runs off, they think they know who is behind it. In reality, Ruth was protecting her daughter.
Leyla wanted more for her life and trusted the wrong people. When the military base told her they could give her a chance to start over with Izzy in exchange for information on the refugees, she jumped at the chance. She didn’t want anyone hurt and believed them when they told her everyone would be safe. Unfortunately, Leyla trusted the wrong people. That is the difference between Izzy and Leyla. As annoying as Izzy could be, she wouldn’t place her needs above the group. Izzy is so desperate to avoid her responsibilities she doesn’t think through the consequences of her actions. She also failed to consider whether Izzy would want to go with her.
Leyla gets a chance to redeem herself by unlocking the radio and allowing Josh and Izzy to catch up with Gavin’s group and save them. Izzy reunites with her father and his group just in time to say a final goodbye to Levi. The beleaguered character has spent the majority of his time vacillating between being a hero, a surprise cheater, and a victim. In his final moments, we learned he was a double agent working against Maya’s group to save his friends. In La Brea Season 3 Episode 5, he saved Gavin and Scott but lost his life in the process. Maya is back at the base, but she has lost a lot of men, and her secrets are out. Gavin also has an ally in Helena, who found him in 10,000 BC.
Their situation doesn’t look good, however. Maya’s group is a black op organization with deep pockets and more greed than compassion. They want to sell the time-traveling planes to the highest bidder regardless of the morality of doing so. If the wrong hands get a hold of the technology, it would be the end of the world as we know it. The stakes have never been higher than in La Brea Season 3 Episode 5. We aren’t just trying to get our group home or prevent sinkholes. The consequences are World War III at best and alternate history at worst.
A rogue giant prehistoric alligator almost ends Gavin and Helena’s reunion, but the unexpected threat is stopped just as with every other episode of La Brea. The siblings will have a chance to reconcile with the entire family and make amends. For Helena, it is a chance to have a family. Eve and the others never got to know her before. I know the entire group will be happy to have her after they save the world and rescue Eve.
Levi knew where the long-term detention facility was that they were holding Eve. Before he dies, he hands the tablet over to Gavin and tells him to save her. The group is initially confused when they don’t find a building but a dual aurora. They quickly figure out, though, that they must go through the red portal to 1965. Helena tells them Maya has a base set up there, and everyone but Scott goes through the portal to save Eve and stop Maya. Hopefully, those who went through the aurora are successful, and everyone returns home to their loved ones. However, Maya has proven to be a formidable foe, and she is playing the long game.
One nagging concern is Paara. Ty’s wife is missing, and he went through the portal to 1965 with the others. It would be especially cruel for him never to get the chance to live the life he was meant to have. After all the mysteries and sci-fi wackiness, that’s what La Brea has really been about. The sinkhole gave people the chance to right wrongs and be the people they should always have been.
Lucas got the chance to become a hero, partner, and someday a day. Gavin was vindicated that he wasn’t crazy and got his mind and family back. Sam learned what was really important to him, and Ty remembered who he was. With only one episode left, I fear we will lose a few more characters before the series closes. Time is running out, and not everyone will return to 2021. Some won’t want to, and others will not be able to. I hope everyone gets the happy ending they are looking for and Maya and her group get what they deserve. Find all our La Brea coverage here.
