SurrealEstate Season 2 Episode 7 Gods And Monsters Review And Recap- Babadook, Unfinished Business, and Tickles In Our Noses
Regrets and trauma shape us, sometimes for the better, but more times than not for the worse. Guilt, greed, disappointment, insecurity, and fear can all destroy us if we let them. In SurrealEstate Season 2 Episode 7, a lifetime and even longer for one person of regret and fear comes to a head. If only more people were thinking of Susan, who isn’t just gone but uncharacteristically passive-aggressive. She remains locked somewhere in her house, but her friends and colleagues are beginning to question her absence. It’s only a matter of time before Lomax is brought to the house and realizes someone has been lying to them.
The hole Susan left at the Roman Agency is enormous, but life goes on. Phil has tracked down Luke’s mother, and another new home seller has a monster under his bed. As with most of the Roman Agency’s listings, the group learns as much as the seller does about life, death, and what matters most. A troll-like monster terrified a young boy until he grew up and became a monster himself. The monster is real, and the emotions that attract the monster are just as concrete. Morris, who is out on parole after a series of crimes, wants to sell his family home, confront the monster, and be with his daughter before it is too late.
In addition to being terrified and potentially violent, he is also dying of a brain tumor. He is on borrowed time, and the need to find closure weighs on him. He finally confesses to Luke and newcomer Lomax that he has been scared his whole life. His father was abusive, and he and his mother barely made it out alive. He blames himself for being unable to protect her and being too scared to fight back. Every night, the monster under the bed would taunt and ridicule him as he went to sleep. Over time, that nightly abuse made Morris hardened and turned him into a bully. Now, as an adult, he hates what he has become but is still scared of the monster.
Everwise, Auggie understands that prison and experience can warp people and make them shadows of who they are supposed to be. Insight into his childhood reveals Auggie had a brother who served time and came out a different person. Twelve weeks after returning home, he was stabbed to death and died. Auggie understands that criminals have families and backstories just like anyone else. Morris doesn’t see any other way and decides to burn the house down with him inside.
Luckily, the monster, whom Auggie had correctly deduced didn’t mean any harm, was able to communicate that he never meant to hurt Morris. He said I only wanted to make you brave. They share a tender moment of understanding, and Morris leaves to be with his daughter. He gave Luke’s advice back to him when Luke realized he needed to deal with his past before he could move on. He opened the file Phil gave him on his mother and began reading. What is in that dossier? We will have to wait and see, but it should be interesting.
Newcomer Lomax joins the agency with special skills of her own. She is sarcastic, smart, sympathetic, and, best of all, a human lie detector. When someone lies, her nose tingles. Undoubtedly, this will come into play once everyone tries to find Susan. It does make me curious if AIs can lie. Is whatever in Susan’s house an AI, or is it a tech-savvy ghost who uses what is around them? Zooey isn’t going to remain patient much longer, and eventually, the group will end up at her new house.
In the meantime, Lomax is already been helpful. She talked with a woman who didn’t want to leave her apartment despite the building being sold to a developer. She had refused to speak to anyone prior but let Lomax in. Lomax quickly earned her trust, and the woman showed her she could not die and had been living in the house for 500 years. She was afraid to leave. Fear played a significant role in SurrealEstate Season 2 Episode 7. Some were running from fear, and others were hiding from it. Neither was successful, though. We have to confront our fears to grow. Lomax helped her understand dying is easy, but truly living is hard. She hasn’t agreed to move yet, but she is at least ready to consider it.
Clever writing allows for a meta moment where Luke says the cast may change, but the story stays the same. It is an intelligent way to acknowledge Susan’s absence and Lomax’s presence and give us hope that what we love about SurrealEstate will continue. That understanding of what the viewer wants in the series keeps it from becoming just another procedural.
SurrealEstate Season 2 Episode 7 is an excellent example of maintaining season-long arcs and presenting ghosts of the week without sacrificing character development. Zooey’s compassion, Phil’s husband and now baby, and Auggie, who is an onion with untold depths, aren’t just side players. They are the heart and soul of the show, and the writing consistently lets them grow into their roles and our hearts.
Quite a few questions are lingering. First, obviously, where is Susan, and is she okay? I refuse to believe she is gone for good. Secondly is Auggie’s previous job. That is a lingering thread that is sure to come back in future episodes. In a tech-heavy season, Auggie’s invention has major ramifications. Will it be a friend or foe? Luke’s mother has been missing for a reason. What that reason was and whether or not he will be welcomed is open for debate. Phil found her, so Luke can go to her anytime now. Lastly, Phil’s new baby. I love his chemistry with Anthony and want only the best for them. However, spooky things tend to happen around the Roman Agency, so I worry for him.
