The 110 Best Lovecraftian Horror, Eldritch Terror, And Cosmic Dread Movies
This list is daunting. It is by no means exhaustive and isn’t in any particular order. It includes the best movies out there though, that owe their lineage to H.P. Lovecraft and his stories. Some of them are direct adaptations, some of them borrow heavily from the kinds of monsters he so lovingly brought to life, and still, others capture the sort of all-consuming paranoia and tension Lovecraft was known for. Admittedly, assigning that quintessential Lovecraft vibe to something is subjective. I think you will find all of these belong on the list for one reason or another.
While I don’t condone the less than perfect beliefs of the author, his art can be appreciated. The Best of Lovecraft list is broken down into three main subcategories. Many of the cinematic choices are really loose. They are more a feeling than anything truly concrete. If you are a lover of the Elder Gods and bone-deep terror, this is the list for you. With HBO’s hotly-anticipated Lovecraft Country coming later this summer, there is no better time to serve up a few hours of nihilistic fear. Here are all the Lovecraftian movies plus where to get them.
Cosmic Dread
Hard to define, Cosmic or Existential Dread is that which can’t be explained. Everything impossible to imagine and even harder to forget. It is those things that come to us in our dreams. We can’t remember them, but they paralyze us with fear. The cognitive dissonance you experience when watching Annhililation, and the “screaming bear” scene begins comes to mind. We intellectually know what we are seeing and hearing but can’t conceptualize it. Here is all that weirdness that makes you feel unreasonably and unbearably scared.
