Servant Season 4 Episode 6 Zoo Review And Recap- Is Leanne The Devil, The Wizard Of Oz, And Other Theories

For three seasons, we have watched as Servant slowly, patiently, and at times confusingly doled out clues. An entire ocean’s worth of ink has been spilled about Leanne being an angel, a witch, a victim, and a sweet young girl. Childhood stories like Pinocchio and The Wizard Of Oz have invaded our Reddit subs. We have swung wildly between hating Sean and Dorothy and sympathizing with them. As we race toward the conclusion of the story, I can’t help but wonder if we are going to get the end of the series we deserve. Servant Season 4 Episode 6 feels like the beginning of the end, and I’m worried it won’t match expectations.

Leanne is still wielding control over the Turner household. Despite the massive sinkhole and the destroyed interior of the brownstone, she is holding a party for Jericho’s year birthday. They missed his real first-year party, so it’s actually an eighteen-month party, but no one really cares. Nero fiddled while Rome burned, and Leanne is carrying on like nothing was wrong while her world crumbled around her. The news reports that the Mayor may have to evacuate them, but for now, they will eat cake.

From the beginning, the party is a disaster. Leanne tries to parade around like she has control over everything, but she is losing it. Sean and Dorothy are a united front, and they may not know how they will get rid of her, but they know they need to. They want to convince Julian to turn against her. He follows her around like a puppy, though, so that may be hard to pull off.

Leanne has become so delusional she thinks if she acts like everything is fine, it will be. Unfortunately, she has become blinded by her hubris. She does appear to be ridiculously powerful, but no one is unstoppable. Julian and Leanne make a good pair because they are both so damaged they close themselves off from the tragedy in their lives. Unfortunately, it’s a survival technique that hasn’t worked all that well for either of them. Julian still hasn’t dealt with his addiction or his guilt, and Leanne is insane.

The strain of their situation is breaking the ties that bind them. Sean and Julian have been close. Dorothy and Julian were once unbreakable. One teenage girl and a terrible tragedy disrupted that. An argument could be made that they were their own worst enemies, but Leanne certainly lent a hand. Their house and their lives are in pure chaos. Animals and neighbors are attacking at every turn. Someone other than Dorothy and Sean seems to see the evil in Leanne. All of the animals at the party are also affected by her.

Time is running out for Leanne. Dorothy is beginning to wake up, and after Bev and Bobbie’s photo book gift, you can see the wheels starting to turn. By the end of Servant, Season 4 Episode 6, Dorothy is waking up even if she has lost another ally. Bev was a cult member living right under their noses. In the disaster of the party, she lures Leanne into her apartment and injects her with a sedative. Before she can do anything, though, she makes the classic villain mistake. She whips herself while delivering a truly terrifying soliloquy to the tune of Funkytown by Lipps Inc. It is the wildest sequence yet in a series known for bizarre scenes and set pieces.

While Julian and Sean fight over their collective guilt and share fabulous barbs, Bev begins the ritual. Julian makes it into their apartment just as Bev is literally blowing up. Leanne stares intently at her as her skin expands and her tongue turns green. Did Leanne do this, or is there some freak allergen she was exposed to, making it seem like the girl has powers?

Who were the cult members in Servant Season 4 Episode 6?

Bev was too good to be true, and the multiple cans of tomato soup were dead giveaways. The young new neighbors tried to attack Leanne upstairs in Dorothy’s room during the party, but she easily killed them and called her park kids to clean up the mess. Bev was a plan B who implemented her plan after a dog bit Leanne. Undoubtedly there are several more cult members entrenched on the block. They don’t appear to be very good at killing Leanne, though, so it hardly matters anymore.

Is Leanne the Devil?

There can be no doubt that, at the very least, Leanne is a scary human being and very sick. She has been obsessed with Dorothy since she was a child and has waited all of this time until she could get to her surrogate mother. Bobbie counsels Dorothy that Leanne is very dangerous and her fixation on her has no boundaries. Servant Season 4 Episode 6 brought Leanne to her breaking point. The episode closed with her laughing hysterically as Bev is taken away in yet another ambulance.

Bobbie says something very interesting to Dorothy in the closing moments. She tells Dorothy she thinks Leanne and her are divinely linked. If Leanne is the Devil, is Dorothy a misguided angel? Can it be as simple as parallel forces? The ability to give life and to take it away? Both women have given life. Dorothy gave birth to Jericho, and Leanne brought him back from the dead. But Dorothy also inadvertently took a life. Leanne has taken multiple lives, and most were not accidents.

The Wizard of Oz and the truth

There have been nods to Oz and the Emerald City since the very beginning. Then, of course, there is Lauren Ambrose’s character name and the red shoes that Dorothy buys Leanne in the first season, and in Servant Season 4 Episode 6, green frosting is everywhere. Bev’s tongue is also stuck out of her mouth, swollen and green when she is taken away in the ambulance. If you believe that the truth will set you free, then everything leads to the discovery of the truth.

Sean is the cowardly lion who has been too afraid to face his part in his son’s death and let Dorothy grieve in a healthy way. He would rather live in denial than admit what happened. Julian is the scarecrow who chooses to let everyone and everything make decisions for him. He lets his sister, and now Leanne dictates where he goes and what he does. Julian also numbs his mind with copious amounts of alcohol and drugs. He needs to take responsibility for his life. Finally, Dorothy is the wayward girl lost in a land of danger and confusion. Everyone around her has tricked her for so long that she barely recognizes herself.

The truth is dangerous to Leanne because once Dorothy finally remembers what happened, Leanne will lose some, if not all, of her power. Once the green curtain has been looked behind, Leanne won’t seem so scary. So much of this series has pointed towards Leanne having power, but what if Bev ate some of the cake and had an allergic reaction? Her mouth could have been green because of the icing. All of the other things could be severe neglect and coincidence. Leanne could easily be a wizard behind a wall who has convinced herself that she has powers when she is just a regular girl traumatized by her time with the cult. The series could end with Dorothy remembering everything and Leanne fading away.

One nagging mystery still bothers me. What happened to Dorothy during the years she wasn’t reporting? There is a significant gap in the DVD dates of her news stories. Where did she go, and why didn’t she do any stories? Did she lose the tapes? Maybe she did more behind-the-scenes work during this time. Something darker could have happened. There is also this nagging idea that Leanne is related to Dorothy somehow. Could Dorothy have had a baby and given it up for adoption eighteen years ago? Has this been a reunion fated from the beginning?

Not since Chezuz Chrust has there been such an episode bathed in dark humor. Dog bites, projectile vomiting, dropped cakes, and loose animals everywhere make this party feel more like a cruel Rube Goldberg machine than a fun petting zoo. Servant Season 4 Episode 6 puts the focus firmly on mothers and their children. Dorothy is beginning to realize Leanne has been planning this for a long time. Bev tells her she is her religion, her faith, and she would die to keep her. Both Leanne and Dorothy have lost their mothers. Dorothy and Julian’s mother died years ago, and Leanne lost her mother in a fire. Just as Dorothy is Leanne’s delusion, Jericho 2.0 is Dorothy’s. I wonder what happens when she finally remembers what happened on that terrible day. The one thing I know for sure, parties at the Turners suck. Find all our Servant coverage here.
