Luz

In this slick, stylish, disturbing horror, Luz is a young cab driver fleeing from the grasp of a possessed woman, whose confession could endanger the lives of everyone who crosses her path.

Cast: Johannes Benecke, Jan Bluthardt, Lilli Lorenz, Julia Riedler

This incredibly well developed independent film puts a fresh spin on demonic possession. The film is well-paced, but the third act delivers a powerful punch. For lovers of demonic possession or ambiguous endings, this is a must-see. Read our explained post and full review here.

One Cut Of The Dead

While shooting a low-budget zombie film in an abandoned warehouse, the crew find themselves caught between actual zombies and a mad director who won’t stop rolling. If you think you know what happens next, think again. Filmmaker Shinichiro Ueda turns the film on its head more than once for one of the wildest, funniest, and most surprising zombie movies of all time. A SHUDDER EXCLUSIVE.

Cast: Harumi Shuhama, Kazuaki Nagaya, Mao, Takayuki Hamatsu

We love this movie at Signal Horizon and it almost made our Top 10 Horror Movies Of 2019. Pretty much the only reason it doesn’t is its technically a 2018 film. It is a hilariously good time perfect for horror fans and comedy fans alike.

Tigers Are Not Afraid

A haunting horror fairytale set against the backdrop of Mexico’s devastating drug wars, TIGERS ARE NOT AFRAID follows a group of orphaned children armed with three magical wishes, running from the ghosts that haunt them and the cartel that murdered their parents. Filmmaker Issa López creates a world that recalls the early films of Guillermo del Toro, imbued with her own gritty urban spin on magical realism to conjure a wholly unique experience that audiences will not soon forget. A SHUDDER EXCLUSIVE.

Cast: Paola Lara, Hanssel Casillas, Rodrigo Cortes, Ianis Guerrero, Tenoch Huerta

This is a personal favorite of our editor who said it punched him in his parental gut with the scares and feels. In fact, this is his top pick for 2019 without exception. It’s beautifully rendered and wildly imaginative.

Hagazussa

In a remote Alpine village in the 15th century lives a marked woman. The scapegoat of ancient superstitions and monstrous misogyny, this self-styled witch begins to assert her otherworldly birthright. This atmospheric debut feature from Lukas Feigelfeld is a haunting pagan death trip and a startling vision of psychedelic horror.

Cast: Aleksandra Cwen, Celina Peter, Tanja Petrovsky, Claudia Martini, Haymon Maria Buttinger

Easily the most gorgeously shot film on this list, director Lukas Feigelfeld’s labor of love is a singular experience. it is weird, wild, deeply disturbing and like nothing you will ever see or hear. Read our explained post here after watching the stylish mindbender.

The quiet life of devoted couple Red (Nicolas Cage) and Mandy (Andrea Riseborough) takes a dark and bizarre turn when a nightmarish cult and their maniacal leader (Linus Roache) seek to possess Mandy…body and soul. A shocking assault on the innocent pair leads to a spiraling, surreal, bloody rampage of all out, mind-altering vengeance. A SHUDDER EXCLUSIVE.

Train to Busan

When a mysterious virus breaks out across the country, the infected turn into the murderous undead. A few terrified travelers find themselves trapped on a bullet train from hell, fighting for their lives as hordes of the living dead crash towards them, crawling closer with every stop. Suspicion is rife and tensions run high as some will do anything to survive and make it to the safe zone.

Cast: Yoo Gong, Yu-mi Jung, Dong-seok Ma

An emotional and tense film, Train is an amazing zombie flick. The zombies are plentiful and terrifying, and the protagonists are easy to root for. This is the type of horror movie that will make you cry just as easily as it scares you.

Terrified

On an ordinary suburban street in Buenos Aires, voices are heard from kitchen sinks. Bodies are levitating. Evil is here. It is up to a doctor, her colleague, and an ex-cop to get to the bottom of this neighborhood nightmare. Demian Rugna’s must-see TERRIFIED is one of the scariest movies of 2018. A SHUDDER ORIGINAL.

Cast: Maxi Ghione, Norberto Amadeo Gonzalo, Elvira Onetto, George Lewis, Agustín Rittano

This is easily the creepiest film on the list. There are several scenes that are just bone-deep chilling. This is a great movie to watch if you are looking to really scare yourself, but beware it packs a punch and shouldn’t be watched to close to bedtime.
