The Outsider Episode 8 Foxhead Recap and Review
The new Westworld trailer is straight-up baller yo. Watch it then get caught up on our other Outsider coverage and then read below for The Outsider, Episode 8 Foxhead Recap and Review.
The episode opens with Jack calling in a fake phone call to get the police away from his apartment. They take the bait and in minutes he has a clear path into his apartment. He has a secret arsenal of weapons stashed, including night-vision goggles and other additional material. He gathers everything and leaves.
There is a big sign for the Tiger Claw Cave. I want to go there. It looks like the circus is coming to town. Lots of loggers. Claude is there and opens up a discussion with his brother who happens to be one on loggers. The Scooby gang gathers to talk about where Claude is. They know he went to Tennessee to visit his brother. Holly wants to go find Claude, but she tells everyone she wants to because she has deduced that Claude is going to be the next monster. She wants to go make contact, so she can vouch for him and fend off an investigation when the new murders start. In a TOTAL exposition dump, she tells us the monster is weakest when it can’t hang around and build up strength. That its weakest after it’s been exposed. Her big game plan is to expose it further. She wants to go to Tennessee and Ralph, Yunis, and Andy are going with her.
Claude and his brother are talking. Claude says he left because he felt like something bad was going to happen. He felt like he was being watched. Like something was about to happen and it was going to be bad. This is a very weird logging camp. His brother talks to someone in a super cool looking car (someone help me out with what type it was). Probably a drug deal as Claude mentions to his brother that he should be careful that his foreman doesn’t see the transaction.
The Scooby gang is deciding how to drive to Tennessee. They divide up and Howie and Ralph catch a brief moment. Howie tells Ralph that Glory is suing everyone except Ralph. He dodged the bullet. Howie then tells him to be careful.
Later Ralph is packing and Jeannie tells him not to go. That he is blind because he doesn’t believe in El Coco. He tells her he will be okay.
Jack has a police radio and hears that there is an APB out for him. They consider him armed and dangerous. He is not thrilled about it (He is really mad).
Ralph is talking to Holly about Jack. Jack was an ace shot that couldn’t pass his psych evaluation in the army. The conversation turns to El Coco. Holly tells Ralph that El Coco just wants to survive like any other entity. Ralph doesn’t think it’s acting like a criminal. Holly argues it’s not a criminal. That its not human. He tells her dryly he knew she was going to say that.
Claude returns to his brother’s home. Which also happens to be the family home. His brother is putting a jigsaw puzzle together without the help of the box lid. Weird and clearly the work of a psychopath.
In the other car Yunis and Andy are talking about Holly. Yunis describes how Holly can find who is going to die. He goes through a whole routine and Andy looks totally freaks. Yunis then tells him he made the whole thing up, and they have a good laugh.
Back in the car that is WAY less fun Ralph tells Holly he was respected and Holly points out he is now chasing the Boogeyman. She then mentions that Ralph helps ground her. That she needs someone to call her out on her bullshit. Ralph looks super uncomfortable.
Claude’s brother offers to let him stay indefinitely. We also learn that his brother is taking anger management classes. He has found them quite helpful. His brother meets someone else in a truck. Could be another drug deal. Claude decides to go out and get Burger King. On the way, he gets pulled over by the police. They immediately arrest him. In jail, he has no clue why he has been locked up. He tells them he needs his phone call at least. They allow him to access to a phone. VERY strange stuff.
Car of no fun. Holly mentions she didn’t know about Ralph’s son. He tells her a story. After his son was born he went home to pick up some clothes for Jeannie, and he stopped to talk to his dead mother and mourned the fact she wasn’t there. There was a song that connected her to him. Washington Square. He heard it when she died and heard it again on that day. He does have some connection to the supernatural. Holly tells him it sounds like a coincidence. It cracks them up to have the roles reversed. It is an absolute cracker of a moment. Ralph finally opening up. Holly being the stoic.
Claude is talking to the guards. They are all good now. His brother shows up, and he is really pissed and immediately starts in on the officers. He calls the skinny one a “Forrest Gump looking motherfucker…” which is kind of true. The other officer pulls his taser…yoinks. They taze him.
A fisherman is gathering his gear and gets sniped . Looks like Jack the marksmen is back. We hear the sounds of a wild animal devouring something. Jack looks on and can hardly tolerate what he is seeing. All that is left of the scene is a bloody hat covered in brain matter. Gross.
Now the brothers Bolton are both in jail. We quickly get a scene of a family on the way to visit some caves. The little boy is really excited to explore the caves. It seems like a fun family activity even if it involves going through an opening called the sphincter.
Jack pulls over and see’s a picture hanging from the rearview mirror. A voice tells him to hand the picture back. Its El Coco and he is turning into Claude. He tells Jack he needs to eat again.
The Tennessee half of the Scooby crew arrive at the jail and bust out Claude and his brother.
Howie and the PI are back home and Howie wants to know why Alec didn’t go. Alec mentions he tasted copper which was the same taste he had when he did a tour in Iraq. It felt like a dangerous foot patrol, and he promised he wouldn’t do any more of those.
There is a dark cave and El Coco is eating again. He is also pacing in the background as Jack cowers.
The brothers go home with the detective crew. They explain everything to the brothers. Claude agrees it feels like something is trying to get into his head. That he feels weird. The El-Coco crew tells the brothers that they need to stay with him to vouch for his safety and whereabouts. There seems to be an agreement.
The family we saw earlier is now partaking in the festival we saw being set up earlier. It does look like a freaking blast. Also really busy. The two kids head off in opposite directions and grandma and granddad go to find cold beers. That is also what our family does.
Howie and Alec are back in the office. Alec feels bad he chickened out. That it was his job to protect Holly. Howie tells him not to worry about it. Alec cannot help but think he has abandoned her.
The El Coco crew is back at Claude’s place. They are talking about where to stay. All the hotels are booked because of CaveStock (the festival has a name!).
Mom and Dad (They are just older parents I shouldn’t have assumed) mention that they are over the festival. Meanwhile, the young boy is befriended by El Coco. El Coco promises to show him a cave and the two take off. The sister sees the two walking and screams get away from my brother. The crowd stops the monster and tears off his mask. El Coco runs away.
There is another drug deal that almost goes down but Ralph interrupts it. Everyone is cramping everyone’s style. Andy and Holly head to town to pick up supplies. Holly gets a weird feeling and heads off to investigate. Andy looks concerned. She crosses the street to a church. It looks rundown. As she enters the church someone asks her how she is doing. She says good and walks up to the front. Yunis is there at the front. She tells him she is terribly tired. They hold hands. Any port in the storm will do.
The CaveStock family are all being debriefed in the police station. They have El Coco’s mask and begin to question the teenage daughter. Late in the evening Yunis is keeping watch/sleeping in his car. Andy and Holly bed down for the night on the porch. It is a full moon. Ralph is awakened by rattling of some kind. He immediately wakes up and pulls his gun searching for the noise. It’s Claude clearly searching for something or someone. The next morning the second half of the Scooby crew arrives waking Yunis up in his car. Howie and Alex have joined the game. Cops show up to question Claude. They have on someone’s cell phone video footage of Claude. Ralph vouches for the real Claude and Holly announces that “he is here”. She turns to Ralph who is slowly or not so slowly becoming a believer. The episode ends with El Coco munching on a deer carcass.
Stray Thoughts
- The director of this episode J.D. Dillard is great. Go watch his creature feature Sweetheart on Netflix right now!
- I really dig how the crew has come together. It’s a real Scooby crew.
- There is not a Cave Stock that I could find but I did find a Cave Fest. It looks rad.
- We saw Jack shoot a feral hog earlier in the series and later saw the body totally mutilated. I guess we know the answer to that now.
- In case you want to connect more with Ralph. Here is the song his mom listened to.
