Found Footage Faves

Deadstream

Deadstream follows a disgraced internet personality who tries to win back his followers by livestreaming himself at an abandoned haunted house. When he accidentally unleashes a vengeful spirit, his comeback event becomes a real-time fight for his life. A SHUDDER ORIGINAL

Cast: Joseph Winter, Melanie Stone

Deadstream is a hilarious found footage haunted house film with enough genuine scares to give you goosebumps. I wouldn’t usually suggest a horror comedy on Halloween as I prefer to indulge my fear genes, but this one from Joseph Winter is a must-see. Deadstream is exactly what a horror-comedy should be. It is kooky, funny, and unexpectedly scary, with a slick videogame sensibility and excellent creature effects.

Grave Encounters

Lance Preston and the crew of the ghost-hunting reality series, “Grave Encounters,” begin shooting the latest episode of their TV show inside an old psychiatric hospital, asking the facility’s caretaker to lock them up till morning. Acting up to the cameras, the group carries out their paranormal investigation. But when terrifying entities begin to attack the crew, terror dawns on the group as they realize that this ghost investigation might be for real. A Canadian take on the found footage subgenre, Grave Encounters treads familiar horror ground but elevates its well-worn story through frightening imagery and genuine scares. Contains strong language, violence, and gore.

Cast: Ben Wilkinson, Sean Rogerson

I’ve seen this movie many times and still jump in all the right places. It is one of those rare examples of a found-footage film that gives you the same feeling you get when going through an abandoned place you shouldn’t be in.

Hell House LLC

In this found-footage gem, a documentary crew visits the site of a haunted house attraction whose opening night ended with 15 unexplained deaths. Eventually, the crew comes across a surviving employee who has footage that shines a scary light on what really went down that night. As we watch those ill-fated thrillseekers shuffling through the horror house, the knowledge of what’s about to happen makes for a squirm-and-scream-inducing good time. Dread Central called it “a perfect fright flick for the Halloween season,” which features “one of the creepiest clowns to appear in a horror movie in a long time.” Sorry, Pennywise!

Cast: Kristin Michelle Taylor, Theodore Bouloukos, Jeb Kreager, Miranda Robbins, Gore Abrams

It’s found footage, there are creepy clowns, and it’s Halloween based. What more could you ask for? If ever there was a film that should be watched on Halloween, it is this one. Nuff said!

Grim Creepers

Speak No Evil

One family accepts an invitation to the rural home of another they met on holiday, only to find their lives altered in unexpected, deeply horrifying ways. From director Christian Tafdrup, SPEAK NO EVIL glides from “squirmy to sinister to full-on shocking” (NY Times). A SHUDDER ORIGINAL

Cast: Morten Burian, Sidsel Siem Koch, Redja van Huet, Karina Smulders

If you like your films intense and nihilistic, this one should be on your what To Watch On Shudder Halloween 2022 list. It is the kind of movie that sticks with, but make sure you are prepared because it is blacker than black and soul-crushing. If you are confused about what happened after you watched, read our explained piece here.

The Dark And The Wicked

On a secluded farm, a man is bedridden and fighting through his final breaths while his wife slowly succumbs to overwhelming grief. Siblings Louise and Michael return home to help, but it doesn’t take long for them to see that something’s wrong with mom—something more than her heavy sorrow. Gradually, they begin to suffer a darkness similar to their mother’s, marked by waking nightmares and a growing sense that an evil entity is taking over their family. A SHUDDER EXCLUSIVE.

Cast: Marin Ireland, Michael Abbott Jr., Julie Oliver-Touchstone

This one creeps up on you quietly and hits you hard in the final act. The acting is superb, and the scares top notch. If possession is your jam, this one does a fantastic job of bringing something fresh to the table. After watching, be sure to read our explained post for all the details and answers you need.

The innocents
THE INNOCENTS

The Innocents

During the bright Nordic summer, a group of children reveals mysterious powers. But what starts out innocent soon takes a dark and violent turn in this gripping supernatural thriller. A SHUDDER EXCLUSIVE

Cast: Rakel Lenora Flottum, Alva Brynsmo Ramstad, Sam Ashraf, Mina Yasmin Bremseth Asheim

I could not love this movie more. There is something inherently unsettling about creepy, powerful kids, and this one takes advantage of both the kids dangerous power and vulnerability. It might just be the most disturbing movie I have ever seen, and that’s saying something considering it sits on a list with The Sadness.

Goofy Creature Features

The Gate

When two boys accidentally dig up the gates of Hell and summon an army of tiny demons, they have to work fast to stop the demons from turning them into human sacrifices, or a big bad demon king will soon be slithering through the gate to take over the world. Oh well, at least Mom won’t see what they’ve done to the house! Part of the Spielbergian kid-centric horror wave that included THE MONSTER SQUAD and THE LADY IN WHITE, THE GATE’s success led to a sequel and a spot on Esquire’s “50 Best ’80s Horror Films” list. A very young Stephen Dorff (BLADE) stars.

Cast: Stephen Dorff, Louis Tripp, Christa Denton

From 1987, The Gate is part of Hollywood’s kids on bikes era that gave us classics like ET and the Goonies. It is a perfect example of the movies from this timeframe, and it is a great time. So if you are looking for nostalgia, start here.

House

A horror novelist moves into a freaky haunted house after his aunt kills herself. Roger Cobb needs a quiet place to write his Vietnam memoir and forget about his young son’s mysterious disappearance. But when ghosts and monsters intrude, Roger’s got to work up the courage to fight back – and make peace with the past. Steve Miner’s (FRIDAY THE 13TH 2 & 3) freaky fright flick mixes Looney Tune’s aesthetics with gross-out gore. Fans of broad 80s horror comedies like EVIL DEAD, RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD, and KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE are sure to love it.

Cast: William Katt, Kay Lenz, George Wendt

It’s goofy, funny, and has some of the most ridiculous creatures ever. It’s definitely not a scary movie, but it is entertaining throughout. Both The Gate and House are acceptable for almost the whole family.

Resurrection

A woman’s carefully constructed life is upended when an unwelcome shadow from her past returns, forcing her to confront the monster she’s evaded for two decades. A SHUDDER EXCLUSIVE

Cast: Rebecca Hall, Tim Roth, Grace Kaufman, Michael Esper, Angela Wong Carbone

Rebecca Hall and Tim Roth are both impressive in this trippy slow burn that is as ambiguous as it is disturbing. If you thought she was great in The Night House, you will think she is terrific here. Hall unravels in the most sublimely beautiful way, and Roth creeps along, turning up the tension every time he is on screen. This is a run, don’t walk feature that should be on everyone’s What To Watch On Shudder Halloween 2022 list.

Mandy

The quiet life of devoted couple Red (Nicolas Cage) and Mandy (Andrea Riseborough) takes a dark and bizarre turn when a nightmarish cult and their maniacal leader (Linus Roache) seek to possess Mandy…body and soul. A shocking assault on the innocent pair leads to a spiraling, surreal, bloody rampage of all-out, mind-altering vengeance. A SHUDDER EXCLUSIVE.

Cast: Nicolas Cage, Andrea Riseborough, Linus Roache, Ned Dennehy, Olwen Fouéré, Bill Duke

Panos Cosmatos opus is the ideal pairing of a madman actor and a madman director. They couldn’t possibly be better together, and this film is the craziest wild ride. Hallucinogenic, blood-soaked, and violent, it is probably Nic Cage’s best work. After watching Mandy, head to Netflix for Cosmatos’ Episode 7 of Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet Of Curiosities.

The Queen Of Black Magic

In this terrifying tale of buried secrets and supernatural revenge, a man brings his family to the rural orphanage where he was raised. Once there, sinister, terrifying events bring the orphanage’s dark history to light. From Kimo Stamboel and Joko Anwar, two of Indonesia’s modern masters of horror. A SHUDDER ORIGINAL.

Cast: Ario Bayu, Hannah Al Rashid, Adhisty Zara

The 2020 remake from Joko Anwar and Kimo Stamboel does the original proud. It is its own beast while still maintaining the magic of the first. It also has some of the most eventful kills I have ever seen. Unfortunately, I still can’t pick up a staple gun. The Queen Of Black Magic deserves to be on every What To Watch On Shudder list for Halloween.

Psycho Goremon

Mimi and Luke resurrect an alien overlord and, using the magical amulet they discovered, force him to obey their childish whims. It isn’t long before intergalactic friends and foes converge in suburbia to battle for the fate of the galaxy.

Cast: Nita-Josee Hanna, Owen Myre, Matthew Ninaber

If you love gore as much as the ridiculous dramatic cosplay of The Power Rangers, this is the film for you. The practical effects are great, and the cheeky nature doesn’t take itself too seriously, so neither should you. Just sit back and enjoy the ride.

The Sadness

When a virus spontaneously mutates, it gives rise to a mind-altering plague. The streets erupt into violence and depravity as those infected are driven to enact the most cruel and ghastly things they can think of. Murder, torture, rape, and mutilation are only the beginning. A young couple is pushed to the limits of sanity as they try to reunite amid the chaos. The age of civility and order is no more. There is only “The Sadness.” Note: The Sadness contains graphic and extreme violence/gore, as well as brief strobe effects in the end credits.

Cast: Regina Lei, Berant Zhu, Tzu-Chiang Wang, Apple Chen, Wei-Hua Lan

This is a wicked gory movie that holds nothing back. This is not the movie to watch while eating dinner. Save it for a few hours after when your stomach is good and settled. It’s zombies like you have never seen before. If you like disgusting movies, you will love this one.

Of course, you can always go with the original Halloween. Watch the Mad God Ghoul Log if all else fails, or you are up well past when you should be asleep.
