From Season 2 Episode 10- Once Upon A Time Explained- The Cave Drawings, The Lighthouse, And Where Is Tabitha?
Randall, Julie, and Marielle aren’t dead, but they probably wish they were. There are a lot of dead folks back in From Season 2 Episode 10, and they have a lot to say. Some are helpful, and others only confuse things. The philosophical bartender Tom is just what Jade needs, while Abby only wants to create an obstacle. Before the end of the From Season 2 Finale, one member is shockingly out, the town is relatively safe again, and the dead are making themselves heard. Whether they are helping or hurting, we will have to wait and see. Here’s everything you need to know about the cave drawings, Tabitha and the lighthouse, and why we all have to have faith.
Why did the Boy In White push Tabitha out of the lighthouse?
The Boy In White has appeared to help those in Fromville from the beginning. He appeared to Tabitha, Sara, Victor, and Ethan and genuinely seemed to want to help. At the end of From Season 2 Episode 10 he apologizes to Tabitha before shoving her out of the lighthouse. He explains it is the only way, but we don’t know what that means. Pushing her was the only way to do what? What are his motives? Tabitha wakes up in a hospital, having been found by several hikers. She is injured and has been unconscious for several days. Did her fall from the lighthouse transport her back to the real world, or is she in yet another reality?
We know Victor’s mother never made it inside the bottle tree and thus didn’t get to the lighthouse. Victor did say he never found his sister. Did the BIW shove her out of the lighthouse as well, and she has been living her life in the real world ever since?
Perhaps the bigger question, though, is why didn’t the BIW want Tabitha to save the children and presumably everyone else. If Victor’s mom was right and saving the kids is critical to getting them all home, wouldn’t the BIW want to help Tabitha do that instead of just getting her out of Fromville? It should be no surprise that Tabitha finds herself in St. Anthony’s hospital. St. Anthony is the patron saint of lost people and things. Is this a clue that Tabitha has been found outside, or is she in yet another pocket world, this time without her family?
Being cut off from Jim, Julie, and Ethan will be a problem for the entire family. Jim didn’t want her to go to the tower, to begin with. How will he deal with her absence in From Season 3? Hopefully, MGM+ greenlights From Season 3 soon so we can find out. Finally, I wonder if Tabitha was found with Victor’s lunchbox. That would be proof that Fromville exists. It might also give insight into how things react to the real world after being in Fromville for so long.
The lighthouse is a massive torch and a symbol of hope in From Season 2 Episode 10
During Ellis and Fatima’s wedding, Boyd realizes he needs to bring a torch to light the darkness at the ruins. That is the key, and he finds himself inside where Martin was once chained up, and the music box is playing. However, Abby appears before he can destroy it and tells him that if he destroys the music box, it will only make things worse. She explains that his hope, not fear, powers the forest. Luckily he doesn’t believe her, though, and destroys the music box and sets it on fire. The music stops, and Marielle, Randall, and Julie all wake up. A German Shepherd shows up barking. Who is this dog to Boyd? Is it a beloved lost pet and thus something comforting or a hound from hell?
Light symbolizes hope and faith in From Season 2 Episode 10. It is the joy that Fatima and Ellis find in the worst of circumstances. It is the faith that, despite Boyd’s anger, allows him to keep trying even when he can’t see a path to safety, and it is the literal illumination of the hidden places in Fromville. What if the lighthouse is a massive torch lighting the way to safety? What if the lighthouse is a lure?
All of this time, we have operated on the belief that the Boy In White was helpful. This could be completely wrong, though. He could be just another manifestation of whatever is controlling Fromville. Abby appears to derail Boyd, so why couldn’t the BIW appear to derail Tabitha? She is vulnerable to children as a mother. Having lost a child makes her even more susceptible to manipulation by a child. Sara thinks the BIW is trying to help them, but she curiously also says she isn’t sure he is a child though.
The cicadas, the music box, the blood worms, and the one in control of it all
We learned Boyd’s blood worm trick gave everyone hope, but it also started a chain reaction that freed the locust and almost got everyone killed. Sara can hear whatever is playing with them and tells Boyd it is laughing at him for bringing them back to town. Likely she is talking about putting the blood worms in Smiley, who incubated the cicadas that invaded Julie, Randall, and Marielle. She further explained to Kenny and Boyd that it would be too late to save anyone if the trio died. Did the music box fuel the locusts, and eventually, they would be released and infect everyone in town? Would they have given birth to something worse than a swarm of killer cicadas?
Jade, the tunnels, and the cave drawings
After communing with Tom in the bar, Jade finds the courage to investigate the tunnels. Tom encourages him to go by telling him that Natural Design “puts the most important things in the places hardest to reach.” Jade may have a hero inside that snarky shell yet. Once in the tunnel, he finds seven children lying on massive altar stones in a circle. They are chanting “Anghkooey.” Jade looks up and sees the symbol directly above them. They all disappear before he can save them or talk with them.
The cave drawings are fascinating. Starting from the far left, the symbol that Jade sees constantly looms over ten stick figures. Is ten the magic number to equilibrium in Fromville? Next, a red Lovecraftian monster rises, looking like some demonic octopus. Is this the thing that is worse than the night creatures? I’m assuming the birds are crows flying just above the monster in the sky. Do they act as the demon’s eyes and ears? Then we have a couple with stick arms linked. This could be Boyd and Kenny holding back the forces of darkness together. It could also be Fatima and Ellis choosing to see love instead of fear.
Next, we have sixteen red stick figures on one side with a white house and F trees directly above it. If the red people are the night creatures and the trees are the black F symbol,s then there is a specific balance to who and what is in Fromville. This becomes even clearer when looking at the two joined circular pictures. They represent night and day. Darkness and light. Does the line between the two symbolize a time when night and day are joined,d as in an eclipse?
Faith plays an integral part in From Season 2 Episode 10. The faith that love can provide happiness even in the worst circumstances is shared by Fatima, Ellis, Donna, and Boyd. Boyd’s intense faith in himself as a leader and a hero knows no bounds. Tilley’s religious spirituality is delivered to those that need comfort in Colony House. The most poignant and selfless look at faith belongs to Kenny. His father’s analogy about a sweater and thread is powerful.
Kristi allowed herself to believe in a happy ending when she saw Marielle walk off the bus. After everything that has happened, though, she no longer has hope. Kenny reminds her that everything is a small part of something larger, and even if they never make it out, what they do could help the next group who gets stuck there make it out. Kenny and Kristi may be the thread of the sweater that is eventually knitted together. Losing hope is the worst thing that can happen to anyone.
Despair is a powerful emotion that makes some people do terrible things out of desperation and anger. It is why Reggie snapped and killed Matthias before shooting Boyd, and it is what makes some retreat in fear and others refuse to give in. Boyd, Jade, and Tabitha use it as motivation. They refuse to sink into the depths of despair. Like them, I refuse to believe that From Season 3 will not happen. Until then, I’ll have to have patience and stay hopeful.
